Medical conditions that may qualify you for disability benefits in North Carolina

Social Security maintains a list of medical conditions that are so severe they automatically mean that you are disabled, whether you live in North Carolina or somewhere else.  This list of conditions are ones that are expected to be permanent, or expected to result in death, or have a certain length of time that it must last.  Each medical condition on this list has a complete description of what symptoms or conditions have to be present with your medical condition for you to “meet” this listing.

The information is published in a “Blue Book” which is used by the Disability Determination Services in each state to help decide Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability cases.  You can find the complete Listing of Impairments Blue Book at the following website:

                                http://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/

Social Security’s Blue Book adult disability evaluation is broken down into 14 different broad numbered body systems or areas of medical disorders or diseases.

In these series of articles about various medical conditions, we have provided a general discussion about what each body system/disorder/disease includes, what has to be proven and what evidence or tests are needed to prove that you “meet the listing” for the specific medical condition.  Also, for your general knowledge, we have included helpful information about symptoms, diagnosis, common treatment, and where you can find more help and information for your medical condition.
